(sorry to have to start a new threat. I just can not seem to find the old thread on cars) Hybrid irony: More accident-, ticket-prone July 20, 2009 Anyone want a good accident prone, ticket prone, expensive, unsafe car? No thank you, I will keep my 2001 Ford van. Read the stats on the green car: greenhellblog.com/2009/07/20/hybrid-drivers-more-accident-ticket-prone/

I think I will stick with my 1999 Ford Ranger with extended cab. It is creeping up on 175,000 and runs like a top. I used to always trade every two years for a new pickup, but this is the best one I have ever had so I will continue using it until it no longer runs. As far as the green car goes, I am going to pass.

Interesting post hasset. I have some insight and a theory behind this as I did sell Toyotas for awhile. As a salesperson you had to be Toyota 'certified',,meaning you were 'supposed' to learn EVERYTHING about each model put out by Toyota and to be certified,,pass all the online tests,,so you were able to pass your 'knowledge' onto the consumer.
Backing up a bit,,the average age of a Toyota buyer is right at 50,,average. Nothing against age (beings I am also in that bracket),, BUT,,, how many 50 year olds are more computer literate than say the 20-30 year olds,,on the average ? Not near as many,,I'd venture to say.
NOW,,, you put that consumer into a Prius,,which has more gadgets, bells,, and junk to distract them,,like a back-up mirror,, GPS,,the screen also shows how and what the 'hybrid' system is doing,,, an advanced stereo system,,blue tooth ( what the hell is blue-tooth?),,buttons for the seats,,doors,,mirrors,,lights,,cruise-control,,etc,,etc.. Getting the picture ?!? OK,,salesperson,,,show that proud, happy new owner EVERYTHING in the delivery room before they leave the dealership. "Yeah,,but manager,,I don't make any money doing that,,I want to be out in the lot SELLING." Is anyone following me,,see the problems ? I can remember wanting to say,,"heres the steering wheel,,brake pedal,,gas pedal,,,buckle your seat belt,,take this manual,,and park this in the garage,,and WHEN you have 3 days vacation,,go sit in the car with your manual and study it til you know it."
So,,thats my theory,,, there is way to much distractions,, just like the cel phone and texting for people. Out of 16 salespeople,,we had ONE that would spend close to 2 hours with her customer showing them everything,,and I guarantee you,,they were as confused as the customer that got 20 minutes from a salesperson.

Did that one person who spent all the time explaining stuff sell more than the others?
I think all the trinkets are just a waste of money and I do not want to read more manuals on anything. As for texting, that is a big waste. I heard on the radio that some states are passing a law saying you can't text while driving a car, train, bus, etc.. How dumb can you get? There should never have been a reason to have a law like that. I saw some guy riding his bicycle down a busy street the other day and he had his left hand on the handlebars of the bike and also had a cell phone. His right hand was texting. You should have seen him wobbling all over the place. What is wrong with people?

hasset,,,no she did not sell more than others,,,but she did complain about others not doing their jobs as thorough as herself. Like Buck,,,I will keep my vehicles also,,,why trade in my '97Cavalier with 123,000 miles on it,,gets 32 mpg average,,for the $4500 on a new car that will be lucky to get 35-40 mpg. My '95 Explorer,,granted not near as good of mileage,,still gets 18 mpg,,has only 124,000 miles,,,runs good,,tows what I need,,14 years old,,good til she drops !!! BTW,,,has anyone heard DJ Dondelinger on the radio advertising for this coming weekends sale ? Correct me if I'm wrong,, but I swear I heard him say "SSObama" in his ad.

You were hearing correctly, nobama. I heard it this morning while listening to KFAN (have to follow the Twins you know even though it is a waste of time). By the way, we could have an entire discussion on that stupid new stadium of the Pohlads but it has already been beaten to death.

I heard it as well. I will keep our cars. They are paid for and they couldnt give me enough to separate from my 98 GMC and my wifes 98 Mazda Protege which gets nearly 45 miles to the gallon. My pickup is not easy on gas...but will pull everything I own. No matter the gimmick, I will not retire my vehicles to support guberment motors or their gaz guzzler plan. I want their ideas to go bankrupt faster than gm and chrysler did.

There is something we are not seeing behind this, I am not sure just what it is, but it's there. Why incentivize the sale of the most modern versions of certin models? Really, if you look at it, the bill was really crafted to get people with larger vehicles, and older tech to change them to a new car. What's in them that makes the gov't want people in them? It's not 4mpg gain, or selling a few cars. Think Onstar, and like systems maybe? There is something to it, and it IS happening or there wouldn't be court cases about it. news.cnet.com/2100-1029_3-5109435.htmlNow they try to call that a victory for privacy, but that is NOT what the FBI lost the case over! The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in OnStar's favor. The ruling was not based on invasion-of-privacy grounds or some other legitimate constitutional basis. The FBI lost because the OnStar passive listening feature disables the emergency signal, the very life-saving call for help that the advertisements tout as the main reason to purchase the system. Ah, just one more reason to never buy a ObummerMotors product! www.tonyrogers.com/news/onstar.htmwww.engadget.com/2009/07/22/onstar-debuts-remote-ignition-block-to-shut-down-stolen-vehicles/ Notice the police are in contact with onstar. Logic says that onstar has to have a tracking system for this to work, The idea it's based on an owners license number is silly, just changing the plates would defeat it. What about states where the plate is owner's property, not vehicles? (IE, NM, CO, UT,AK) The idea a cop calls onstar and says it's a yellow impalla would only work if onstar had a uplink track on the vehicle, and could pinpoint it on the road, and not based on a customer-demand location transmission. In the case of vehicles with "preset" memory for seat, mirror, and settings, onstar uplinks the specifications. (if you go to trade a newer caddi, the test drive will match your settings.) Conceivable that they would know if MNDAPA 1 or Mrs.MNDAPA1 was driving the vehicle. (provided they are different size, and build ) Ya, I want that. I bet you are all just dying to have that much information about you randomly floating through the ether. Wiretap your car to listen on anything said in it, the onboard GPS as to where it's gone, and when, and for how long - Even make you pay for the hardware when you buy your car! It's not even tin-foil hat material, they all brag about the great advantage of the system to sell them to us.
