Does anyone know why the leaves on my broccoli plants have holes in them and pieces missing?
I really don't want to use a pesticide.

There are several pests that can affect broccoli plants. Normally they just snack but don't really hurt the plant. As hosta growers in this area we have to watch for slugs. They do eat holes in the foliage. They can and do affect broccoli as well. You will never see them during the day. They come out after dark. You will need to go out well after dark with a flashlight to check, probably after midnight. This might not be what is affecting your plants, but it certainly sounds like the way they affect the foliage.
