The birds are everywhere and migration is in full swing. We have been getting loads of chipping sparrows and fox sparrows, hermit thrush, kinglets and even a few early warblers. I am going to fire up our waterway and pond today so they can do some bathing and splashing. Splashing water is one of the best ways to attract birds to the yard.
Also remember that within two weeks or less the orioles and even the hummingbirds will be returning. We have had them arrive as early as May 2 and not after May 12. Get those nectar feeders cleaned and a jar or two of grape jelly for the orioles. Also remember to clean your nectar feeders every third day or so once feeding begins for the health of the hummers. Too many people fill their feeders and don't bother to refill them until the nectar is gone. It does get sour and probably ferments after a few days.
Most of all, get out in the yard and enjoy beautiful Minnesota. This is a very cold, but also very special place. Appreciate it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mrs. Robely and I were just out on our deck and witnessed a nuthatch pop into a hole in a dead tree. After several minutes it popped back out. I guess it is nest building time.
Although an amateur bird watcher I would love to hear any reports on nest building that you have or any other notes of interest. I am just fascinated with bird activity and lore. If I am not mistaken the nuthatch has also been referred to as the devil bird. Does that ring a bell with any of you? They are rascals, indeed.

You are so right buck,,Minnesota is a special place despite the cold we endure. I told my wife last spring (year ago),,I guess I really am getting old, the winter even goes by too fast. But I love the spring, it truly is a special time of the year, now if I can just keep those squirrels out of the bird-feeders.
